NordVPN is one of the most security-focused VPN providers available. Key security features include:

NordVPN's desktop app uses an interactive world map as the main interface. Click a country pin or use the sidebar to connect. The map is visually appealing but can be slow to render on older hardware. The sidebar search is faster for daily use.

On Windows and macOS, the app sits in the system tray and can auto-connect on startup. Split tunneling is available on Windows, Android, and macOS (but not iOS, due to Apple restrictions). The app-level kill switch is separate from the system-level one: the app kill switch only blocks specific apps from accessing the internet if the VPN drops, while the system-level kill switch blocks all traffic.

The mobile apps are well-designed. On Android, you get full features including split tunneling, protocol selection, and Threat Protection Lite. On iOS, features are slightly limited (no split tunneling, fewer protocol options) but the core experience is smooth. The Quick Connect button picks the fastest server automatically, which works well in practice.

NordVPN's Meshnet feature lets you route traffic through other devices running NordVPN on your account. This is useful for accessing your home network remotely, LAN gaming with friends, or creating a private encrypted tunnel between devices without using NordVPN's servers.
