NordPass is the only major password manager using XChaCha20 encryption. While AES-256 remains the industry standard, XChaCha20 offers equivalent security with better performance on devices that lack dedicated AES hardware acceleration. NordPass also uses Argon2id for key derivation, which is considered superior to PBKDF2 because it is resistant to GPU and ASIC-based brute force attacks.

NordPass has one of the cleanest interfaces among password managers. The desktop app (available for Windows, macOS, and Linux) uses a simple sidebar layout with categories for Passwords, Secure Notes, Credit Cards, and Personal Info. The search function is fast and supports filtering by folder or tag.

The browser extensions (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, Opera) handle auto-fill and password saving. Auto-fill accuracy was 94% in our tests, which is adequate but below 1Password (98%) and Dashlane (96%). The extension occasionally struggles with multi-step login forms and custom-styled password fields.

NordPass includes several useful extras beyond basic password management:

• Data Breach Scanner: Checks if your email addresses or stored credentials appear in known data breaches. Available on Premium plans.
• Email Masking: Generate disposable email addresses that forward to your real inbox. Useful for signing up on sites you do not fully trust.
• Password Health: Dashboard showing weak, reused, and old passwords with one-click links to change them.
• Secure password sharing: Share individual items or folders with other NordPass users with configurable permissions.

NordPass is part of the Nord Security product family, which includes NordVPN (VPN), NordLocker (encrypted file storage), and NordLayer (business VPN). All products share the same account system and can be bundled at a discount.

If you already use NordVPN, adding NordPass creates a cohesive security setup managed through a single Nord account. The bundle pricing typically offers 20-30% savings compared to individual subscriptions. NordPass also integrates with NordLocker for storing encrypted files that are too large for the password vault (like recovery documents or sensitive PDFs).

• NordVPN users: If you already use NordVPN, NordPass is the natural complement. Bundle pricing makes it affordable, and having one account for both simplifies management.
• Users who want modern encryption: XChaCha20 + Argon2id is the most modern encryption stack among password managers. While not practically more secure than AES-256 + PBKDF2, it represents a forward-looking choice.
• Budget-conscious users who want premium features: At $1.99/month on the 2-year plan, NordPass Premium is cheaper than 1Password ($2.99/month) and Dashlane ($4.99/month) while including breach scanning and email masking.

NordPass is not the best choice if you need the most polished auto-fill experience (choose 1Password), want self-hosting (choose Bitwarden), or need a truly unlimited free plan (choose Bitwarden or Proton Pass).
