Norton uses a multi-layered detection engine that combines several technologies. SONAR (Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response) is Norton's behavioral analysis system that monitors running processes in real time. Instead of relying solely on virus signatures, SONAR watches for suspicious behaviors like unauthorized file encryption (ransomware), unexpected network connections (trojans), or privilege escalation attempts (rootkits). If a process behaves maliciously, SONAR blocks it and rolls back any changes it made.

On top of SONAR, Norton uses machine learning models trained on telemetry from its 80+ million user base. When a new file is encountered, Norton checks its reputation against a cloud database of known file hashes. Files that are too new or rare to have a reputation are analyzed locally using the ML model. This combination of cloud reputation, behavioral analysis, and machine learning is what allows Norton to catch 99.7% of zero-day threats in our tests.

Norton's Smart Firewall goes beyond basic inbound/outbound filtering. It monitors application network behavior and flags programs that start communicating with known command-and-control servers or unusual IP ranges. The firewall rules are automatically configured based on your network type (home, work, public), so most users never need to touch the settings.

Norton's desktop interface is organized as a dashboard with four main tiles: Security, Internet Security, Backup, and Performance. The "My Norton" landing page shows your protection status and quick access to scans, VPN, and password manager. The interface is functional but can feel cluttered compared to Bitdefender's minimal design.

Scans run quietly in the background with low CPU priority, so you can work normally during a full system scan. Norton Insight pre-analyzes trusted files (those signed by known publishers or seen on millions of devices) and skips them during scans, which significantly reduces scan time on subsequent runs. A first full scan takes about 28 minutes, but subsequent scans can finish in under 10 minutes.

The Norton 360 mobile app on Android includes malware scanning, Wi-Fi security alerts, web protection, and the VPN. The iOS app is focused on web protection, Wi-Fi security, and device security checks (checking for outdated iOS versions and insecure settings). Both mobile apps are lightweight and do not drain battery noticeably.
